The inauguration of Mumbai's first underground Metro line, the Aqua Line (Mumbai Metro 3), marks a significant milestone in the city's transportation infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened Phase 1 of the Aqua Line, covering the Colaba to Seepz Metro stretch, on Saturday. This new line promises to revolutionize commuting within the city, providing a faster and more efficient mode of transport for its residents.
The Aqua Line will run between Colaba, Bandra, and SEEPZ (X), passing through the Aarey-JVLR-BKC stretch. The initial phase encompasses 10 stations, with nine operating underground and one, Aarey, located at ground level. These stations include Aarey, Marol Naka, CSMIA T1 (Terminal 1), MIDC, SEEPZ, Sahar Road, CSMIA T2 (Terminal 2), Vidyanagari, Dharavi, and BKC.
The line will operate with nine trains, each comprising eight coaches, and is expected to complete 96 daily trips. Each train has a capacity of over 2,000 passengers, significantly improving the carrying capacity of the city's transportation system. Fares for the Aqua Line range from ₹10 to ₹50, making it an affordable option for commuters. Services will operate from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM on weekdays and from 8:30 AM onwards on weekends.
The Mumbai Metro 3 corridor, spanning 33.5 km, has been a significant investment, costing over ₹32,000 crore. While the first phase is now operational, the full line is expected to be completed by June 2025. The Aqua Line holds the potential to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and offer a cleaner and more sustainable mode of transportation for Mumbai's growing population.
The introduction of the Aqua Line is a testament to the government's commitment to modernizing India's urban infrastructure. It is a welcome development for Mumbai, a city known for its traffic challenges. The Aqua Line promises to significantly improve the quality of life for residents by providing a reliable, convenient, and efficient transportation system. The success of this project could serve as a model for other cities across the country seeking to address their growing transportation needs.
