Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a scathing critique of the United Nations, likening the international organization to an 'old company' failing to keep pace with the evolving global landscape. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave in Delhi, Jaishankar highlighted the UN's declining relevance in tackling pressing global challenges, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jaishankar argued that while the UN remains the sole multilateral institution, its inability to effectively address critical issues has led nations to seek alternative solutions. He pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as a prime example, noting that countries ultimately relied on independent actions or formed their own coalitions, such as the COVAX initiative, to manage the health emergency. The minister also expressed disappointment over the UN's perceived inaction regarding the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, questioning its role in such crises.
India, a long-standing advocate for UN reform, has consistently pushed for an expansion of the Security Council to better reflect the contemporary global realities. Jaishankar asserted that while the UN will likely continue to exist, its dwindling effectiveness has given rise to a 'non-UN space' where nations are increasingly taking independent action to address global concerns. This signifies a shift towards a multipolar world where individual nations, coalitions, and regional organizations play a more prominent role in shaping global affairs.
Jaishankar's remarks underscore a growing dissatisfaction with the UN's performance among many member states. The organization's bureaucratic structures, lack of agility, and often-ineffective decision-making processes have been criticized for hampering its ability to respond effectively to global challenges. This has led to a call for significant reform, including adjustments to the Security Council's composition and a renewed focus on inclusivity and responsiveness in the UN's decision-making processes.
