In a passionate plea for a more equitable global order, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has called for urgent reforms to the United Nations Security Council, reiterating India's long-standing desire for a permanent seat. Delivering his address at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Jaishankar emphasized the need to address the inequalities that have plagued the international system, particularly in terms of access to resources, technology, and the uneven distribution of benefits from globalization.
He argued that the world is facing a critical juncture, marked by the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple conflicts, and a concerning lag in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Jaishankar proposed a five-point agenda to create a more just and equitable global order. These points included strengthening independent platforms, reforming established institutions like the UN Security Council and multilateral development banks, democratising the global economy through the creation of production hubs, correcting distortions in global infrastructure, and sharing experiences and new initiatives.
The minister highlighted India's commitment to multilateralism and its initiatives in areas such as digital infrastructure, payment systems, and infrastructure development. He also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message that this is not an era of war, emphasizing the need for dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law in resolving conflicts. Jaishankar specifically addressed the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, expressing concern over the potential for further escalation and reiterating India's support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Jaishankar's call for UN Security Council reforms echoes India's long-standing position. India, backed by major world powers like the US, UK, and France, believes it deserves a permanent seat on the council, which currently comprises China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US. The minister's speech serves as a reminder of India's ambitions to play a more significant role in shaping the global order, highlighting its commitment to multilateralism and its desire for a more equitable world.
