The recent political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a significant shift with the revocation of President's rule in the union territory, paving the way for the formation of a new government. This decision follows the victory of the National Conference-Congress alliance in the recent Assembly elections, marking a change in the political dynamics of the region.

The revocation of President's rule was officially announced through a gazette notification issued by the Union Home Ministry. The notification, signed by President Droupadi Murmu, cited the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, and the Indian Constitution. The order dated October 31, 2019, imposing President's rule, was revoked immediately before the appointment of the chief minister under the aforementioned Act. This signifies a transition from central rule to a democratically elected government.

The formation of the new government will be led by Omar Abdullah, the vice president of the National Conference. He has been elected as the leader of the alliance and is set to become the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. The NC-Congress alliance secured a majority in the Assembly elections, securing a mandate from the people to govern the region.

The imposition of President's rule in October 2019 came following the formal division of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This move was accompanied by the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state. This period of central rule marked a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.

Prior to October 2019, central rule had been in effect in the erstwhile state since June 2017. This followed the resignation of then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti after the BJP withdrew its support from the PDP-led government. The current revocation of President's rule signifies a return to democratic governance in the region, with the people's mandate reflected in the formation of a new government led by the NC-Congress alliance.
