Ishan Kishan's journey back to the Indian national team has taken a significant turn after a period marked by setbacks and missed opportunities. Earlier this year, Kishan was excluded from the BCCI's list of centrally contracted players, a decision reportedly linked to his perceived lack of commitment to domestic cricket, particularly his absence from several Ranji Trophy matches despite requests from the BCCI. This absence resulted in his exclusion from Team India, with his last appearance for the national side being the Test series against South Africa.
However, recent events suggest a change in fortunes for the young batsman. Ishan Kishan's impressive performances in domestic cricket have caught the attention of the selectors, paving the way for his potential return to the national fold. According to reports from PTI, Kishan is expected to be included in the India A squad for their upcoming tour of Australia, where they will face Australia A in two four-day matches. Furthermore, he is also slated to participate in an intra-squad match featuring members of the senior team led by Rohit Sharma, leading up to the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The selectors' decision to consider Kishan's inclusion is a direct result of his consistent form in domestic cricket. He has amassed three centuries in red-ball matches, including a century in the Bichi Babu Tournament upon his return to domestic play. He followed this with another century in the second round of the Duleep Trophy 2024 and most recently, secured a century while representing Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy against Railways.
The upcoming tour of Australia presents a valuable opportunity for Kishan to prove his worth and stake his claim for a spot in the senior team. He will be competing alongside other promising players vying for a place in the national setup, including Abhimanyu Easwaran and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Both Easwaran and Gaikwad are considered strong contenders to succeed Rohit Sharma, who will miss the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to personal reasons. While Gaikwad was initially considered the frontrunner for the captaincy, Easwaran's impressive recent form, with four consecutive first-class centuries, has strengthened his case.
