The Indian government has taken a significant step towards improving public health by extending the free fortified rice scheme until December 2028. This decision, announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, will see fortified rice distributed through various welfare programs, including the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS), the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS), and the PM POSHAN scheme. The scheme, fully funded by the government, aims to address the prevalent issue of anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies across India.
The extension of the scheme aligns with the government's Anaemia Mukt Bharat plan, a comprehensive initiative focused on eradicating anaemia. The government's commitment to this plan is evident in the substantial financial allocation of ₹17,082 crore for the fortified rice scheme over the next five years. This initiative recognizes the crucial role of nutrition in overall health and wellbeing, particularly for vulnerable populations.
The effectiveness of food fortification in combating anaemia and other micronutrient deficiencies has been widely acknowledged globally. Rice, being a staple food for a large portion of the Indian population (65%), serves as an ideal vehicle for delivering essential nutrients.
