India-China LAC patrolling agreement: Military and diplomacy lauded
  • India and China reach patrolling agreement.
  • Jaishankar credits military and diplomacy for success.
  • Disengagement expected by October 28-29.

The recent agreement between India and China regarding patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) marks a significant breakthrough in resolving the four-year-long military standoff. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during an interaction with students in Pune, attributed the success of this agreement to the combined efforts of the military and skillful diplomacy. He acknowledged the challenging conditions faced by the military in defending the country at the LAC and praised their determination in standing their ground. Jaishankar also highlighted the role of diplomacy in negotiating the agreement, emphasizing the importance of both military strength and diplomatic engagement in achieving a resolution.

The agreement, announced this week, is expected to see the complete disengagement of Indian and Chinese forces from the LAC by October 28-29. This disengagement follows a period of intense negotiations between the two countries since the situation on the border became strained in 2020. The agreement reflects a commitment by both sides to de-escalate tensions and to work towards a peaceful resolution of the border disputes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, welcomed the agreement and emphasized the need to handle differences and disputes peacefully.

Jaishankar's statement highlights the importance of a multi-pronged approach to resolving international disputes. He acknowledged that the military plays a crucial role in defending national interests, but emphasized the importance of diplomacy in navigating complex situations and finding mutually acceptable solutions. The recent agreement between India and China provides a ray of hope for a more stable and peaceful relationship between the two Asian giants. However, restoring trust and achieving lasting stability requires continued dialogue and cooperation between both sides.
