A dramatic incident unfolded in flood-stricken Bihar as an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter carrying relief material made a forced landing on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which could have resulted in a major disaster, was thankfully averted due to the quick thinking and skillful maneuvering of the pilot. The helicopter, an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH)-Dhruv, took off from Darbhanga Air Force base with a mission to deliver essential supplies to those affected by the widespread flooding in the state.
The forced landing occurred in Naya Gaon, Muzaffarpur, where the helicopter encountered technical difficulties. As the engine malfunctioned, the pilot, displaying remarkable presence of mind, managed to land the aircraft in shallow waters, ensuring the safety of the crew and avoiding any casualties on the ground. The pilot's actions deserve immense praise for their bravery and skill in ensuring the well-being of those on board and the surrounding populace.
Immediately after the landing, the helicopter partially submerged in floodwaters, highlighting the precarious situation faced by the crew. However, all four IAF personnel, including two officers, were swiftly rescued. Local residents played a vital role in the initial rescue efforts, demonstrating their commitment to helping those in need. Subsequently, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) took over and transported the rescued crew to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
This incident comes at a time when the country is experiencing a series of aviation mishaps. Earlier on Wednesday, a helicopter belonging to Delhi-based Heritage Aviation crashed in Pune, resulting in the tragic deaths of two pilots and an engineer. While dense fog was initially suspected as a contributing factor, the precise cause of the Pune crash remains under investigation. The recent string of helicopter accidents raises serious concerns about safety protocols and maintenance procedures within the aviation industry.
