The Hockey India League (HIL) 2024 auction witnessed a frenzy of bidding as marquee Indian players, Harmanpreet Singh and Hardik Singh, attracted massive bids. Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of India's bronze-medal winning team at the Paris Olympics and the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy victor, was the highlight of the auction. This drag-flick specialist was acquired by Soorma Hockey Club of Punjab for a whopping Rs 78.1 lakhs after a fierce bidding war. Several franchises, including Hyderabad Toofans, SG Delhi Pipers, and Tamil Nadu Dragons, competed to secure Harmanpreet's services. However, he ultimately joined his home state team, where he will be joined by fellow stars Gurjant Singh and Prasad Vivek Sagar.
There was speculation that Harmanpreet would join SG Delhi Pipers, where his former teammate PR Sreejesh now serves as Director of Hockey. However, the Punjab franchise emerged victorious in the bidding battle. Another pivotal signing was Hardik Singh, who was at the center of one of the most intense bidding wars of the day. After receiving competitive offers from multiple teams, Hardik was ultimately signed by UP Rudras for Rs 70 lakhs. The UP-based franchise further strengthened their roster by securing another high-profile player, Lalit Yadav, for Rs 28 lakhs.
Beyond these major signings, other notable stars were also acquired in the HIL auction. Forward Mandeep Singh and midfielder Manpreet Singh were both roped in by Team Gonasika. Mandeep Singh was signed for Rs 25 lakhs, while Manpreet Singh fetched Rs 42 lakhs, making them a formidable duo for their new team. The HIL auction underscored the growing demand and value of top Indian talent, setting the stage for an exciting season of the revamped Hockey India League.
