The Indian cricket team displayed an aggressive batting style on the fourth day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur. The team declared their innings with a lead of 52 runs, having reached a total of 285 for nine wickets in 34.4 overs. This aggressive approach resulted in India achieving the fastest 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 runs in the history of Test cricket.
Despite this impressive performance, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar remained unimpressed with India's batting order. Gavaskar expressed his disapproval during his commentary on JioCinema, stating, “You are talking about a man who got almost 9,000 runs in Test cricket batting at No. 4.” This comment was directed at Virat Kohli’s altered position in the batting order.
Following the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kohli was expected to be the next batsman. However, this was not the case. Instead, Rishabh Pant walked in to bat and unfortunately, he only managed to score nine runs off 11 deliveries before returning to the dressing room. Kohli then came down to bat at number five, achieving a significant feat during his innings. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest player to score 27,000 international runs, achieving this milestone in his 594th innings, compared to Tendulkar’s record of 623 innings.
This milestone places Kohli alongside Kumar Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting, the other two cricketers to achieve this record. Sangakkara reached the milestone in 648 innings, while Ponting did so in 650 innings. Kohli’s contribution of 47 runs off 35 balls in the first innings of the second Test showcased his ability to quickly adapt to the changing batting order.
Apart from Kohli’s achievement, other notable performances included Yashasvi Jaiswal’s stellar 72 runs off 51 balls, which played a crucial role in India's push for victory. KL Rahul also contributed significantly with 68 runs off 43 deliveries, showcasing his consistency and valuable contribution to the team’s overall performance.
