The Bar Council of India (BCI) has made a significant concession to final year law students aspiring to become lawyers. Following an order from the Supreme Court, the BCI has allowed final year law students to register for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE XIX), scheduled for November 25, 2024. This decision comes after a petition was filed challenging the BCI's previous notification that barred final semester law students from registering for the exam.
The BCI's counsel informed the Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwal, and Justice Manoj Misra, that they have complied with the court's earlier interim direction to allow final year law students to take the AIBE. The BCI further assured the court that new guidelines for next year's AIBE are in the works and will be presented to stakeholders within four weeks.
The Supreme Court acknowledged the BCI's efforts and recognized the importance of ensuring that final year law students do not lose a year due to procedural hurdles. The court's order clearly stated that the petitioners and similarly placed candidates are now eligible to register for the AIBE, while emphasizing the BCI's commitment to engaging stakeholders in developing the new guidelines. The case will be reviewed again in November.
