In a shocking incident that highlights the vulnerabilities of rural communities to financial scams, a fake State Bank of India (SBI) branch was discovered operating in Chhapora village, Shakti district, Chhattisgarh. This elaborate scheme, which involved a fabricated physical branch, recruitment of unsuspecting employees, and forged documents, has raised serious concerns about the need for increased financial awareness and vigilance, particularly in areas with limited access to banking services.
The fake branch, located approximately 150 kilometers from Chhattisgarh's capital Raipur, was meticulously designed to mimic a legitimate SBI outlet. The fraudsters went to great lengths to create an illusion of authenticity, including installing computers, chairs, bank account opening forms, and even inverters. They even posted notices on the branch walls encouraging customers to open accounts, further reinforcing the appearance of a legitimate financial institution. The deception was so convincing that six individuals accepted job offers at the fake branch, believing they were securing employment with India's largest public sector bank.
The scam came to light on September 27th when a local resident, Ajay Kumar Agrawal, noticed inconsistencies between the branch's presence and SBI's official infrastructure. Agrawal had applied for an SBI Kiosk in Chhapora and became suspicious when the nearest branch was located in Dabhara. He alerted SBI officials at the Dabhara branch, leading to the swift arrival of authorities and police. Upon questioning the six employees, the truth about the fake branch was uncovered. The manager of the fraudulent operation is currently absconding, and police are actively investigating the case.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of customer education and awareness, particularly in rural areas where access to financial services might be limited. The fraudsters targeted a village with a significant population and connectivity, hoping to capitalize on the community's reliance on local banking facilities.
