Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm across India and parts of the world. It marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, as depicted in the epic Ramayana. Dussehra falls on the tenth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu lunar month Ashvin, which usually corresponds to October or early November in the Gregorian calendar. This year, Dussehra is observed on October 11, 2024.
The festival holds immense religious and cultural significance for Hindus. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, truth over falsehood, and righteousness over injustice. The story of Ramayana, which forms the basis of Dussehra, serves as a moral compass for many Hindus, highlighting the importance of virtues like courage, perseverance, and devotion to Dharma (righteousness).
Celebrations of Dussehra vary across different regions of India. In some places, effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna, and son Meghnad are built and then burnt to symbolize the defeat of evil. This act of burning the effigies is known as Ravan Dahan. In other regions, people perform Ramlila, a dramatic enactment of the Ramayana story, over several days leading up to Dussehra. These performances are often a vibrant blend of music, dance, and theatrics, attracting large crowds.
Dussehra is also considered a special occasion for the worship of Goddess Durga. In many parts of India, especially in eastern and northeastern states, Durga Puja is celebrated during the same period as Dussehra. People worship Goddess Durga, who is believed to have vanquished the demon Mahishasura, signifying the victory of good over evil. The celebrations include elaborate pandals decorated with intricate artwork, immersion of Durga idols in water bodies, and offerings of prayers and sweets.
Beyond its religious significance, Dussehra is also a time for joy, celebration, and family gatherings. People exchange gifts, wear new clothes, and enjoy special meals. The festival is marked by colorful decorations, vibrant costumes, and a festive atmosphere. In many parts of India, Dussehra also marks the beginning of the festive season, leading to the celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights, a few weeks later.
