In a significant blow to the illegal drug trade, authorities have seized a massive amount of MD drugs and raw materials worth a staggering Rs 1,814 crore from a factory disguised as a manufacturing unit in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The high-stakes raid, conducted by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Delhi, marks a major victory in the fight against illicit drug production and distribution.
The factory, located in the Bagroda Industrial Estate, was discovered to be operating as a sophisticated and well-equipped facility for the production of MD drugs. The operation, believed to be the largest illegal drug manufacturing unit busted by the Gujarat ATS to date, was reportedly producing 25 kg of drugs daily. The accused had carefully constructed the facility over a period of six months, highlighting the intricate planning and extensive resources invested in the illicit operation.
Intelligence gathered by the Gujarat ATS over a period of one to one and a half months led to the identification of the location. After verifying the information, the ATS collaborated with the NCB in Delhi to launch a coordinated raid. During the operation, authorities seized 907 kg of MD drugs in both solid and liquid forms from a rented shed. Additionally, 5,000 kg of raw materials and equipment used for drug production, including grinders, motors, glassware, and heaters, were recovered from the site.
The arrest of two individuals, Amit Chaturvedi (57) and Sanyal Prakash Bane (40), marked a significant development in the case. Investigations revealed that Bane had a previous arrest record in 2017 for possession of MD drugs. After serving five years in jail, Bane was approached by a friend of Chaturvedi, and the duo devised a plan to establish a large-scale drug manufacturing operation. They rented a shed in the industrial estate and invested three to four months in accumulating raw materials and setting up the facility.
The discovery of this sophisticated drug manufacturing unit underscores the growing threat posed by illicit drug networks. The successful bust by the Gujarat ATS and the NCB highlights the importance of coordinated efforts and intelligence-led operations to combat the drug trade. Authorities are continuing their investigations to uncover the extent of the network and bring all those involved to justice.
