  • Customer lured agent to home
  • Body found in Indira Canal

The tragic incident in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, highlights a disturbing trend of violence against delivery personnel, a vulnerable segment of society often targeted due to their isolated work environment and the easy accessibility of cash-on-delivery transactions. The incident, which took place on September 23, 2023, involved a 30-year-old delivery agent, Bharat Prajapati, who was allegedly lured to a customer's home under false pretenses. The customer, identified as Gajanan, and his accomplice, Akash, had placed an order for smartphones worth approximately Rs 1 lakh (approximately $1,200 USD) via cash-on-delivery, a common payment method in India, particularly for online purchases. The delivery agent was led to believe this was a legitimate transaction, but the order was merely a ruse to lure him to the house where he would be murdered.

Once inside the home, Gajanan and Akash, with their sinister intentions masked by a fabricated sense of normalcy, strangled the delivery agent to death. They then disposed of his body in the Indira Canal, attempting to erase all traces of their crime. This callous act highlights the extreme danger that delivery agents face in their everyday work, and underscores the importance of safety protocols and increased security measures within the delivery industry. The police, under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashank Singh, are investigating the matter thoroughly, determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This horrific incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by delivery personnel and the need for a multi-pronged approach to address these issues. Implementing stricter identity verification procedures for cash-on-delivery transactions, equipping delivery personnel with personal safety devices and training them in self-defense, and encouraging collaboration between delivery companies and law enforcement agencies are crucial steps towards ensuring the safety and security of these essential workers. In addition, society as a whole has a responsibility to foster a culture of respect and empathy for those who serve us, recognizing their contribution to the smooth functioning of our daily lives.
