Delhi's air quality is rapidly deteriorating as the festival of Diwali approaches. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has already surpassed 301, indicating 'Poor' air quality. This alarming situation is a result of the combined impact of various pollution sources, including firecrackers, vehicle emissions, and industrial activities. The toxic pollutants released into the atmosphere pose a significant threat to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
The burning of firecrackers during Diwali is a major contributor to the spike in air pollution. Traditional fireworks release a cocktail of harmful substances, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. These pollutants have detrimental effects on the lungs, heart, and overall respiratory system. Additionally, vehicle emissions from the city's burgeoning traffic contribute significantly to the poor air quality. The increasing number of vehicles coupled with inadequate infrastructure and poor traffic management exacerbate the pollution levels.
Industries in and around Delhi also play a role in the city's air quality woes. Industrial emissions, particularly from factories and power plants, release significant amounts of pollutants into the air. These emissions, often containing heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, and other harmful substances, add to the overall pollution burden. The combination of these factors creates a toxic cocktail that blankets Delhi and poses a serious health risk to its residents.
