Delhi, the capital of India, experienced a significant deterioration in its air quality on Monday, with a thick layer of smog enveloping several parts of the city. This marked the first time in the current season that the air quality index (AQI) slipped into the 'very poor' category, raising concerns about the health implications for residents.
The presence of smog is a recurring issue in Delhi during the winter months, primarily attributed to factors such as stubble burning in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and seasonal changes in weather patterns. As the temperature drops and wind speeds decrease, pollutants tend to get trapped near the ground, leading to the formation of smog.
The deteriorating air quality has prompted authorities to implement various measures to combat the problem. These include deploying anti-smog guns, which spray water mist to settle dust particles and reduce pollution levels.
