The festive atmosphere of Diwali was shattered by a tragic incident in northeast Delhi's Shahdara, where a man and his teenage nephew were gunned down while celebrating the festival. The victims, identified as Akash Sharma and Rishabh Sharma, were enjoying the holiday with their family when two assailants on a scooter approached them and opened fire. The incident, which occurred around 8 PM on Thursday, also left Akash's 10-year-old son, Krish, injured. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Witnesses and family members recounted a chilling scene where the attackers, after touching Akash's feet in an apparent gesture of respect, abruptly turned violent. Videos circulating on social media captured the horrifying moment. Akash, wearing a yellow kurta and preparing to burst firecrackers, was seen trying to flee into his house as one of the attackers dismounted the scooter and unleashed a volley of bullets. Rishabh, who chased after the attackers, was also struck by gunfire. The three victims were taken to a hospital, where Akash and Rishabh succumbed to their injuries.
Police, alerted by a PCR call, arrived at the scene and confirmed the deaths. They reported that five rounds were fired during the attack. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with police considering personal enmity as a possible motive. Akash's wife, alleging that she recognized the attackers, claimed a long-standing land dispute existed between them. Further complicating the case, Akash's brother, Yogesh, stated that the family was falsely accused in a previous incident where the attackers had fired shots at their own home but then filed a case against the Sharma family, claiming they had instigated a fight. The police are scrutinizing the evidence, recording statements from family members, and pursuing all angles in their investigation.
