Cyclone Formation Expected in Bay of Bengal, Impacting Odisha Coast
  • A cyclonic storm is predicted to form in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The storm is expected to intensify and reach Odisha-West Bengal coasts.
  • Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along the Odisha coast.

A cyclonic storm is anticipated to develop in the Bay of Bengal, potentially impacting the Odisha coast, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This weather event is expected to unfold in stages, starting with the formation of a low-pressure area in the next 24 hours, progressing to a depression by October 22, and finally culminating in a cyclonic storm by October 23. The storm's trajectory is predicted to be west-northwestward, bringing it close to the Odisha-West Bengal coast by October 24.

The IMD's Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, has highlighted the significant weather changes accompanying this storm. He has warned of rough sea conditions, with wind speeds reaching up to 45 km per hour by October 21, increasing to 40-50 km per hour by the evening of the same day. On October 23, wind speeds in the central Bay of Bengal are forecast to reach 65-75 km per hour. As the storm reaches the Odisha-West Bengal coast on October 24, wind speeds are expected to escalate to 100-120 kmph.

In light of the impending storm, the IMD is urging fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea along and off the Odisha coast until October 25. The coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal are likely to experience heavy rainfall due to the cyclone. The rainfall is anticipated to commence in Odisha from October 23, peaking on October 24 and 25. Some areas of Odisha are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with a few areas potentially facing extremely heavy rainfall during this period.

The upcoming cyclonic storm is a critical reminder of the need for preparedness and caution in coastal areas. The IMD's predictions provide valuable insights into the storm's evolution and its potential impact. It is essential for residents of affected areas, especially fishermen and those residing near the coast, to stay informed about the latest weather updates and follow the safety advisories issued by authorities.
