  • IMD issues warning of strong winds and rough seas
  • Fishermen advised to stay ashore, shipping regulations enforced

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the formation of Cyclone Dana over the Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation currently over the central Andaman Sea is projected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23, posing a significant weather threat to the coastal regions of India. The IMD forecasts that the storm will move towards the northwest Bay of Bengal, reaching near the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by the morning of October 24.

The IMD has outlined the anticipated stages of the developing storm. A Low Pressure Area is likely to form over the East-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining North Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. This system is then expected to intensify, progressing from a depression by the morning of October 22 to a cyclonic storm by October 23. The agency has also provided warnings about the expected weather conditions associated with the developing cyclone.

The Andaman Sea is expected to experience squally weather with moderate to rough seas until October 21. From October 22 to 24, the Central Bay of Bengal is forecasted to witness wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 55 km/h, leading to rough to very rough sea conditions. In the north Bay of Bengal, squally winds of 45 to 55 km/h, also gusting to 55 km/h, are anticipated from October 24 to 25.

The IMD has issued a warning to fishermen, advising them against venturing into the Andaman Sea until October 21, the Central Bay of Bengal from October 22 to 24, and the north Bay of Bengal from October 24 to 25. The agency has also recommended the judicious regulation of shipping and offshore activities during this period. The favorable conditions for cyclone development, with sea surface temperatures ranging from 29 to 32 degrees Celsius across the Bay of Bengal, further underscore the urgency of these preventative measures.
