Cyclone Dana Expected to Form in Bay of Bengal
  • Cyclone Dana expected to form by Oct 23.
  • It will reach northwest Bay of Bengal by Oct 24.
  • Fishermen advised to avoid certain sea areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about the formation of Cyclone Dana, which is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic circulation currently over the central Arabian Sea is anticipated to intensify into a cyclone by October 23rd, 2024, reaching the northwest Bay of Bengal, specifically off the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal, by the morning of October 24th. This information underscores the importance of staying updated on weather forecasts and heeding warnings from authorities.

In preparation for the potential impact of Cyclone Dana, the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into certain sea areas. They are urged not to sail in the Andaman Sea until October 21st, the Central Bay of Bengal between October 22nd and 24th, and the north Bay of Bengal from October 24th to 25th. This measure aims to ensure the safety of fishermen and minimize potential risks associated with the approaching storm.

The IMD's prediction is based on the continuous monitoring of weather patterns and the analysis of various meteorological factors. The upper air cyclonic circulation over the central Andaman Sea, which was observed in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 20th, has persisted and is expected to evolve into a Low Pressure Area over the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. This low-pressure area is likely to intensify into a depression by October 22nd and further develop into a cyclonic storm by October 23rd.

The IMD's forecast also includes information about the expected wind speeds and sea conditions during the period leading up to and following Cyclone Dana's formation. Squally weather with moderate to rough sea conditions are likely over the Andaman Sea until October 21st. Over the Central Bay of Bengal, squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35 to 45 kmph and gusting to 55 kmph is anticipated from October 22nd to 24th, accompanied by rough to very rough sea conditions. Similarly, squally wind speeds reaching 45 to 55 kmph with gusts up to 55 kmph and rough to very rough sea conditions are expected over the north Bay of Bengal from October 24th to 25th.

In addition to advising fishermen, the IMD has recommended judicious regulation of shipping, port activities, and offshore and onshore operations during the period of Cyclone Dana's formation and movement. This proactive approach aims to minimize potential disruption and damage caused by the storm. The IMD's monitoring and forecasting capabilities are crucial for ensuring public safety and mitigating the potential impact of natural disasters.
