Coastal India Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Cyclone Forms
  • Heavy rainfall expected in coastal India.
  • Cyclonic circulation moving towards Bay of Bengal.
  • IMD warns of depression and cyclonic storm.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for coastal regions of India, predicting heavy rainfall as a cyclonic circulation moves towards the Bay of Bengal. This upper air cyclonic circulation, initially over the central Andaman Sea, has shifted to the North Andaman Sea on Sunday, according to the IMD. The department forecasts that this circulation will develop into a Low-Pressure Area over the East Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours.

The IMD's predictions indicate a significant escalation of the weather event. This Low-Pressure Area is expected to intensify into a depression by the morning of October 22 and further evolve into a cyclonic storm by October 23, both over the East Central Bay of Bengal. Subsequently, the storm is predicted to move northwest, reaching the northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal by the morning of October 24.

The IMD has issued a specific warning for very heavy rainfall in South Interior Karnataka and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Additionally, heavy rainfall is anticipated in various regions including Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal & North Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh. These predictions follow a recent episode of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu on October 19, causing major disruptions to services due to waterlogging in several areas, including Chennai.

The recent rainfall in Tamil Nadu was attributed to a depression over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. This depression moved west-northwest at 14 kilometers per hour and crossed the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts near Puducherry and Nellore, around 4:30 am on Thursday. The latest weather prediction highlights the intensifying weather patterns over the Bay of Bengal and the potential for significant rainfall and disruption in various coastal regions of India.

The IMD's forecasts are crucial for preparedness and mitigation efforts in affected regions. Authorities and individuals should take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage and ensure the safety of communities. The IMD's continuous monitoring and updates will be vital in providing timely information and guidance to ensure a safe and well-coordinated response to this developing weather event.
