The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has taken proactive steps in response to severe weather conditions along the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Recognizing the potential for emergencies, the ICG has activated its Emergency Response Teams and intensified rescue and relief operations in the affected regions. This response follows heavy rainfall in the area, with Chennai experiencing over 20 centimeters of precipitation, prompting the closure of schools and colleges.
The Coast Guard's Regional Headquarters (East) in Chennai has mobilized 29 Disaster Response Teams (DRTs), comprising 148 trained personnel, to remain on high alert. These DRTs are equipped with essential life-saving and medical gear, ensuring they can swiftly respond to emergencies and provide critical rescue and medical assistance to those affected by the adverse weather. Ten of these teams have been specifically stationed in Chennai to ensure a rapid and localized response.
The ICG has also taken steps to safeguard the maritime community, particularly fishermen. With high tides and dangerous sea conditions predicted, fishermen have been strongly advised to return to shore and suspend all fishing activities until weather conditions improve. The ICG has increased the frequency of its sea patrols to monitor the situation and respond to any unforeseen emergencies.
Beyond the immediate response, the ICG's actions highlight the importance of disaster preparedness and community safety. The force has a long-standing history of coordinating effective disaster response operations, working closely with local authorities and government agencies to minimize loss of life and property. The proactive measures taken in this instance underscore the ICG's commitment to ensuring the safety of coastal communities during extreme weather events.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the current weather disturbances along the southeastern coast are likely to persist for the next few days, necessitating heightened vigilance. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are hopeful that timely intervention and preparedness will mitigate the impact of the ongoing weather crisis.
