  • CJI defends collegium system, stating its flaws do not signify fundamental issues.
  • Judges face increasing workload, requiring time for reflection and legal study.
  • Social media's impact on judiciary discussed, acknowledged as both beneficial and challenging.

Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud has defended the collegium system, arguing that its capacity for improvement does not imply fundamental flaws. Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Chandrachud addressed concerns surrounding the system of appointing Supreme Court and High Court judges, emphasizing its collaborative nature involving different levels of government and the judiciary. He acknowledged the possibility of disagreement during the consultation process, highlighting its importance as a testament to the strength and maturity of India's democratic system.

Chandrachud stressed that criticisms of the collegium system should not overshadow the institution's overall value and longevity. He stated that the system's ability to evolve and adapt over the past 75 years is a testament to its enduring strength and its role in upholding India's democratic governance. He further emphasized the importance of acknowledging the increasing workload faced by judges, both in terms of volume and complexity, as they ascend through the judiciary. Chandrachud highlighted the unwavering commitment of judges, despite their demanding schedules, and expressed concern about the lack of time allotted for reflection and legal study. He posed a thought-provoking question: "Do we give our judges sufficient time to think or read about the law or do you just want them to be merely a mechanical machine in disposal of the cases?"

The impact of social media on the judiciary was also addressed by the Chief Justice. While acknowledging the transformative influence of social media on all aspects of judging, he stressed the need for judges to exercise caution in their public statements, ensuring appropriate language and mindful conduct. However, Chandrachud also recognized the positive aspects of social media, emphasizing its potential to reach a wider audience and foster societal engagement. He acknowledged the complexities introduced by the digital age, but ultimately expressed optimism regarding its overall positive impact on society.
