The heavy rain forecast looming over Chennai has prompted the Tamil Nadu government to implement safety measures, prioritizing the well-being of its citizens. In a proactive step, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the closure of schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. This decision aims to safeguard students and faculty from potential hazards associated with inclement weather.
Furthermore, acknowledging the challenges posed by heavy rainfall on daily operations, the Chief Minister issued an advisory to IT companies in the affected districts, encouraging them to adopt a work-from-home policy for their employees from October 15 to 18. This measure aims to reduce potential disruptions caused by heavy rainfall, such as transportation difficulties and disruptions to normal office operations.
The Tamil Nadu government has also proactively addressed the monsoon preparedness by conducting a comprehensive review meeting on October 14, 2024, under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The meeting brought together key government officials, including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, and Director-General of Police Shankar Jiwal, to strategize and coordinate efforts for effective monsoon management. The state government has issued alerts to District Collectors, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and proactive measures to mitigate the potential impact of heavy rainfall.
The Tamil Nadu government has outlined potential challenges and their corresponding mitigation strategies, including the possibility of traffic disruptions, waterlogging in low-lying areas, road blockages due to fallen trees or branches, damages in informal settlements, increased water levels in water bodies, and landslips in hilly areas. By addressing these potential concerns beforehand, the government aims to minimize disruptions and ensure the safety of its citizens.
