The city of Chennai, India, has been grappling with widespread flooding after heavy rains lashed the region. The Chennai Corporation has reported that over 300 locations in the city have been inundated, leading to significant water stagnation. In response, the corporation has initiated the deployment of pumps to drain the accumulated water and alleviate the situation.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, inspecting flood mitigation efforts, revealed that the Chennai Corporation control room has received over 1500 complaints related to rain-induced problems. The corporation has successfully addressed 600 of these complaints. The authorities have also taken steps to ensure uninterrupted power supply for all residents in Chennai, urging the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to prevent any disruptions during the rains.
Anticipating the potential for more rainfall, the Tamil Nadu government has prepared 931 relief centers across various districts, including 300 centers specifically in Chennai. These centers are equipped to accommodate flood-affected residents, with capacities ranging from 50 to 1000 individuals. In addition to providing shelter, the government has also set up 35 community kitchens in Chennai to ensure adequate food supplies for those affected by the floods.
Recognizing the importance of communication during emergencies, telecom service providers have been directed to ensure uninterrupted services throughout the rainy season. To assist with rescue and relief operations, 89 boats have been made available in Chennai, while 130 boats have been deployed to other districts. Medical camps have been established at 1000 locations across the state to provide treatment for flood-affected residents.
To bolster the relief efforts, the Tamil Nadu government has enlisted 65,000 volunteers from various districts. These volunteers are prepared to assist flood-affected residents in Chennai and other affected areas. The Chief Minister is expected to make a decision on declaring holidays for educational institutions later in the day. Recognizing the challenges posed by the flooding, the government has encouraged IT companies to permit employees to work from home.
The government has warned of more rainfall expected in the coming days. The situation in Chennai remains fluid, with ongoing efforts to address the impact of the flooding. The focus remains on providing immediate relief and support to affected residents while ensuring their safety and well-being.
