The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual employee of Kolkata Police, accusing him of the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The chargesheet will be presented to a special court in Sealdah. According to officials, the alleged crime occurred while the doctor was taking a break and resting in the hospital's seminar room. Roy, who was known to frequent the hospital, was apprehended a day after the doctor's body was discovered on August 9th. Kolkata Police, who initially made the arrest, handed over Roy and other evidence to the CBI upon their takeover of the investigation. The horrifying details of the doctor's ordeal emerged following a thorough investigation.

The CBI's chargesheet, which contains statements from nearly 200 individuals, names Roy as the primary suspect. However, the agency is still investigating the possibility of other suspects and whether the crime was a gang rape. The investigation was handed over to the CBI following nationwide protests and a court order. This tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice across India, underscoring the urgent need for greater safety measures for medical professionals. The incident has also brought to light the systemic issues that contribute to violence against women in India.

The victim's colleagues have been actively protesting for two months, demanding justice in the RG Kar case and calling for enhanced security measures for doctors. They have recently escalated their protest by embarking on a hunger strike, highlighting the urgency of their demands. In a separate development, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI. Ghosh faces accusations of financial irregularities and evidence tampering. The arrests and ongoing investigations highlight the multifaceted nature of the case and the need for accountability at all levels. The pursuit of justice for the victim and her family remains a paramount concern, as does ensuring the safety and security of all medical professionals in India.
