CBI Charges Sanjay Roy in Trainee Doctor's Murder
  • CBI files chargesheet against Sanjay Roy for rape and murder of trainee doctor.
  • Roy allegedly committed the crime on August 9 while the victim was asleep.
  • Junior doctors continue their fast-unto-death demanding justice and workplace safety.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This incident, which occurred on August 9, 2023, has sparked outrage and protests among the medical community, demanding justice for the victim and improved safety measures for healthcare workers.

The chargesheet, filed before a special court in Kolkata, alleges that Roy, a civic volunteer with the local police, committed the crime while the victim was asleep in the seminar room of the hospital during a break. Notably, the CBI did not include the charge of gangrape, suggesting that Roy acted alone. The investigation remains open, indicating that further inquiries and potential developments might arise.

The incident has ignited a wave of protests from junior doctors in West Bengal who are demanding accountability for the tragic death of their colleague and a safer work environment. For three consecutive days, they have been on a fast-unto-death, a testament to their deep distress and unwavering pursuit of justice. The protesting doctors have also called for the removal of the Health Secretary, NS Nigam, citing alleged administrative incompetence and corruption within the department.

Their demands extend beyond individual accountability and include systemic changes to ensure the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals. These demands encompass the establishment of a centralized referral system for all hospitals and medical colleges, a bed vacancy monitoring system, and task forces to ensure essential provisions like CCTV cameras, on-call rooms, and washrooms at their workplaces. The protesting doctors, united in their grief and determination, are determined to see justice served and systemic changes implemented to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
