BJP's Third Straight Win in Haryana Makes History
  • BJP wins third consecutive term in Haryana.
  • Manohar Lal Khattar's tenure second longest in state.
  • BJP's victory marks longest governance period in Haryana.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a historic feat in the recent Haryana Assembly elections, securing its third consecutive term in power. This victory marks a significant milestone for the party, making it the first to hold power for three consecutive terms in the state's history. The BJP secured a commanding majority by winning 48 out of 90 seats, while the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, managed to win 37 seats. Both parties contested all 90 seats in the election.

The BJP's success is a testament to its strong hold on the state's political landscape. The party has been in power since 2014, governing during the 13th and 14th Assembly terms. With the latest win, the BJP will continue to govern during the 15th term, further consolidating its position. This achievement surpasses the previous record held by the Congress, which had the longest period of governance in Haryana on two separate occasions.

The Congress's longest stint in power was from 2005 to 2014, during the 11th and 12th Assembly terms. Bhupinder Singh Hooda served as the Chief Minister during this period, holding the office for an impressive nine years and 235 days, making his tenure the longest by any Haryana Chief Minister. Another significant period of Congress rule was from 1968 to 1977, during the 3rd and 4th Assembly terms. Bansi Lal and Banarsi Das Gupta served as chief ministers during this time, collectively governing for eight years and 344 days.

The BJP's current tenure, which started in 2014, is now poised to become the longest period of governance in Haryana's history. Manohar Lal Khattar, from the Karnal constituency, became the Chief Minister on October 26, 2014, and held the position for nine years and 138 days until March 12, 2024, making his tenure the second-longest in the state's history. After Khattar, Nayab Singh Saini was appointed CM, holding the position for 211 days. With the BJP's recent victory, their time in power will exceed 14 years, surpassing all previous records.

In comparison to the BJP's dominance, the Indian National Lok Dal governed the state for a comparatively shorter period of five years and 224 days under the leadership of Om Prakash Chautala. Haryana's first Chief Minister was Bhagwat Dayal Sharma of the Congress, who held the post for 143 days in 1966. He was succeeded by Rao Birender Singh, the founder of the Vishal Haryana Party, who governed for 241 days from March 24, 1967, to November 20, 1967. The shortest tenure was held by the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya), which governed the state for only 15 days in 1991.
