In the wake of severe rainfall that crippled Bengaluru's infrastructure, the Karnataka government has established a high-level committee to address the challenges faced by tech parks and IT companies. Chaired by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and co-chaired by IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge, the committee aims to devise long-term solutions to the persistent flooding and traffic issues plaguing the city's technology hubs. The recent torrential downpour, breaking records for the past three decades, has caused widespread disruption and damage. Rainfall ranging from 92mm to 157mm has resulted in severe flooding, affecting multiple tech parks and IT companies, prompting several businesses to implement work-from-home arrangements as their offices became submerged.
This is not the first instance of Bengaluru grappling with flood-related problems. Two years ago, Belur Ring Road was completely inundated, with water infiltrating tech parks and necessitating rescue operations. The recurring nature of these issues has compelled the government to take decisive action. Recognizing the need for a permanent solution, the state government has formed a committee tasked with working on a war footing to resolve infrastructure and traffic issues within and around Bengaluru's tech parks. IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating that Bengaluru has been severely affected by heavy rains due to cloudbursts, resulting in significant challenges for the city and its residents.
The committee, comprising leaders from the IT, BT, and startup vision groups, will actively engage with industries, corporations, business park associations, and citizen groups to develop comprehensive strategies to fortify the city's infrastructure. These strategies will encompass immediate, short-term, and long-term measures aimed at mitigating future flooding and improving traffic management in Bengaluru's tech corridors. Kharge underscored the government's commitment to addressing the concerns of the city's tech industry, acknowledging the substantial impact the incessant rains have had on the operations of key industry stakeholders. The committee has been tasked with evaluating infrastructure challenges and implementing solutions to prevent future flooding events and enhance traffic management within Bengaluru's technology hubs.
