The recent heavy rainfall in Bengaluru has severely impacted the city's transportation system, leaving commuters stranded and facing significant challenges in navigating the city. The Deccan Herald reports that a severe shortage of auto-rickshaws and cabs on ride-hailing apps has left many unable to reach their destinations. This shortage stems from auto-rickshaw drivers' reluctance to operate during heavy rains due to concerns about hidden potholes and flooded roads, which pose safety risks.
While public transport options like buses and the metro remained operational, the heavy rainfall and increased demand following the Dasara holidays resulted in delays and overcrowding. Traffic controllers noted a significant influx of people returning to Bengaluru, with an even greater influx expected after the long weekend. This surge in demand, coupled with the persistent rain, further exacerbated the challenges faced by commuters.
The situation was particularly dire for those relying on taxis. Passengers arriving at the Cantonment Railway Station and Shantinagar bus stand reported difficulty finding cabs, with some charging exorbitant fares for short trips. The overwhelming demand on ride-hailing services prompted many commuters to stay home to avoid the arduous and unreliable journey.
Commuters who braved the weather and opted for public transport encountered additional frustrations due to heavy traffic and waterlogged streets. Prolonged delays were reported across various routes, adding to the already challenging experience of reaching work or home. The combination of heavy rainfall, increased demand, and safety concerns among auto drivers created a perfect storm for transportation disruptions in Bengaluru.
Tanveer Pasha from the Ola-Uber Drivers and Owners Association highlighted the heightened demand for rides, noting that even those who typically walk short distances or use bike taxis were now opting for autos and cabs. This increased demand, coupled with the reduced availability of vehicles due to driver concerns, contributed to the severe cab shortage plaguing the city.
