The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and 11 districts in Karnataka, warning of heavy rainfall expected to persist until October 24. The alert comes as Bengaluru has already experienced significant rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and traffic disruptions. The city has seen an unprecedented surge in rainfall, with October 15 recording a dramatic 65 mm of rainfall, more than 228% above the usual levels for this time of year.
The heavy downpour has caused widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas, impacting residents and businesses alike. Local tech hub Manyata Tech Park, a prominent center for several major companies, was submerged due to the heavy rains. The BBMP has deployed tractors to assist residents affected by floods, demonstrating the severity of the situation. The heavy rain has also caused significant traffic disruptions, with roads becoming congested and difficult to navigate. The IMD has predicted that Bengaluru will continue to experience light to heavy rains throughout the week, raising concerns about further flooding in low-lying areas.
The yellow alert also extends to the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, where strong winds have created near-cyclonic conditions. Authorities have advised tourists and locals to stay indoors, suspending all adventure and water-based activities until further notice. Visiting beaches has been discouraged due to the high winds and safety concerns. The IMD forecasts that heavy rainfall will continue in north interior Karnataka until October 22, south interior Karnataka until October 23, and coastal Karnataka on October 22 and 23.
With the potential for more heavy rain in the coming days, authorities have been placed on high alert to manage potential flooding and other rain-related hazards. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to exercise caution as more downpours are expected. The recent surge in rainfall has highlighted the need for robust drainage systems and improved flood preparedness in both urban and coastal areas. The IMD forecasts that the temperature in Bengaluru will hover around 28 degrees Celsius during the day and 20 degrees Celsius at night. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions as the city navigates the continued heavy rainfall through the week.
