The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is poised for a significant upgrade with the introduction of a new elevated taxiway. This project, scheduled to commence construction in early 2025, aims to revolutionize aircraft movement and drastically reduce waiting times, ultimately enhancing the overall airport experience for passengers and airlines alike.
The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the entity responsible for operating and managing the airport, has meticulously designed the western cross-field taxiway. Discussions with contractors are currently underway, signifying the project's imminent realization. Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer of BIAL, has confirmed that construction is expected to begin in early 2025, with the new elevated taxiway becoming operational within 36 months.
This ambitious project encompasses a 1.4-kilometer stretch featuring two parallel paths that will seamlessly connect the existing north and south runways. Notably, the upgrade is designed to accommodate larger aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777, accommodating the increasing demand for air travel and broader aircraft types.
The elevated taxiways are strategically positioned to intersect with key city-side roads, including the North Cargo Road and the proposed metro corridor. This integration will facilitate smoother airport operations and provide passengers with more convenient and efficient commute options. According to Raghunath, "This will improve airfield circulation and provide additional connectivity between the North and South runways, reducing taxiing times and saving fuel."
Beyond the elevated taxiway, BIAL has taken proactive measures to ensure minimal flight disruptions during the upcoming winter season. The North runway (09L-27R) has been equipped with the necessary infrastructure and approvals for low-visibility takeoff (LVTO). This development enables the airport to utilize both runways during low-visibility conditions, with the North runway dedicated to LVTO departures and the CAT-III ILS South runway handling arrivals. This strategic implementation is anticipated to significantly increase the airport's capacity, from 22 to 60 air traffic movements per hour during periods of low visibility.
In December 2020, KIA's south runway achieved compliance with CAT-IIIB operations, a cutting-edge navigation system that empowers aircraft to land safely even in low visibility conditions. This crucial advancement further enhances the airport's operational capabilities.
BIAL has ambitious plans to complete the civil works for the North runway by the end of December 2024, paving the way for full-day operations with enhanced capacity. These comprehensive upgrades are expected to streamline passenger travel through Bengaluru, minimizing inconvenience and fostering a more efficient and enjoyable airport experience.
