Adulterated Ghee Probe Suspended Pending Supreme Court Ruling
  • SIT probe into alleged adulterated ghee temporarily suspended.
  • Supreme Court to hear case on October 3, awaits further instructions.
  • SIT collected preliminary information on procurement and tendering process.

A cloud of controversy hangs over the revered temple of Lord Venkateswara in Andhra Pradesh, as an investigation into the alleged use of adulterated ghee in the preparation of laddus has been temporarily suspended. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), tasked with probing the matter, awaits further instructions from the Supreme Court, which is set to hear the case on October 3. The SIT, in its three-day investigation, has gathered preliminary information regarding the procurement and tendering process of the ingredients used in the temple offerings. The team also visited the laboratory at Tirumala to assess the situation.

This investigation stems from a revelation made by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on September 18. He claimed that animal fat was used in the preparation of the ghee by a supplier and subsequently used in the preparation of prasadams, including the laddu at the temple. This startling revelation sent shockwaves across the state, raising concerns among devotees and temple authorities alike.

The Supreme Court, however, has cast doubt on the allegations, seeking evidence to substantiate the claim of adulterated ghee being used in the preparation of the laddus. During a hearing on Monday, the Apex Court questioned the State government’s counsel, Siddharth Luthra, about whether the alleged adulterated laddus underwent any form of testing. The court expressed concern over the government’s handling of the issue, questioning why a second opinion was not sought before making such a sensitive announcement, which could deeply hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees. The Bench also highlighted the importance of handling religious matters, especially those related to sacred offerings, with utmost care, emphasizing the need to “keep gods away from politics.”

In light of the Supreme Court's observations, the DGP announced the temporary halt of the SIT’s investigations until the court's next hearing. The SIT's future course of action will be determined by the directives issued by the Apex Court. The investigation's suspension highlights the sensitivity surrounding the allegations and the need for a thorough and unbiased examination of the facts before any definitive conclusions are drawn. The Supreme Court's intervention underscores the importance of upholding the sanctity of religious practices and ensuring transparency in matters affecting the faith of millions.

The incident has sparked a debate about the importance of ensuring food safety and quality control, especially in religious institutions where offerings are considered sacred. It also raises questions about the transparency and accountability of those responsible for procuring and managing temple offerings. The outcome of the Supreme Court's hearing will be crucial in determining the future of the investigation and the impact on the devotees’ faith in the temple and its practices.
