Akriti Chopra, a long-standing executive at Zomato and elevated to the position of cofounder in 2021 ahead of the company's IPO, has resigned from the Gurugram-based food and grocery delivery platform. This news was revealed in a stock exchange filing by Zomato.
Chopra's journey with Zomato began in 2011 when she joined as a senior manager of finance and operations. She later climbed the ranks to become the company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a position she held until 2020 when Akshant Goyal took over. Her most recent role was as Zomato's Chief People Officer.
Chopra's resignation, effective September 27, 2024, was formally announced in the filing. She cited pursuing other interests as the reason for her departure. In her resignation email, which was attached to the filing, Chopra expressed gratitude for her 13-year tenure at Zomato, describing it as “an incredibly enriching journey.”
Speculation arose regarding a potential conflict of interest and governance concerns following Zomato's acquisition of Blinkit in 2022. Chopra is married to Albinder Dhinsda, the founder of Blinkit. However, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal asserted that Chopra was not involved in any discussions or decisions related to the transaction.
Chopra's career at Zomato saw her play a crucial role in building the company's finance team, establishing business finance functions across its various verticals, and scaling those operations. She also led the development of Zomato's internal legal, governance, risk, and compliance teams.
Her contributions extended to facilitating funding rounds for Zomato as a private company and establishing its presence in international markets, though the company has since withdrawn from those markets. Chopra's departure marks her as the fifth Zomato cofounder to leave the company, following Gunjan Patidar in 2023, Mohit Gupta in 2022, Gaurav Gupta in 2021, and Pankaj Chaddah in 2018.
Several other senior executives have also exited Zomato in 2022 and 2023, including Rahul Ganjoo, the former CEO of food delivery, and Pradyot Ghate and Siddharth Jhawar, both vice presidents. However, Ganjoo and Ghate have recently rejoined Zomato and are working on District, the company's new standalone app for its going-out business.
