The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced during the Budget Session of Parliament, has been referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament (JCP) by the government. The committee, chaired by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, is actively engaging with stakeholders to gather feedback on the proposed amendments. The article highlights the concerns raised by various Muslim organisations about the potential impact of the Bill on waqf properties and the role of non-Muslims in waqf boards.
Pal, in his interview with The Indian Express, emphasizes the government's intention to ensure transparency and prevent encroachments on waqf properties. He clarifies that the Bill aims to protect these properties and ensure their use for the benefit of the intended beneficiaries, including women, children, and orphans. He acknowledges the concerns regarding the involvement of the district collector as the dispute resolving authority and the potential for non-Muslims to be involved in waqf boards.
To address these concerns, Pal assures that the JCP will reach out to all stakeholders, including state waqf boards, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), and religious leaders from different sects. He underlines the JCP's commitment to dialogue and consensus-building, inviting individuals and organizations to submit their views and suggestions. The JCP plans to conduct meetings across the country, from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, to ensure wide representation and participation in the consultation process.
Despite the opposition from several Muslim bodies who have called for the Bill's withdrawal, Pal insists that there is support for the Bill, citing the endorsement from the Ajmer Sharif Dargah delegation. He acknowledges the diversity of opinions but remains optimistic about reaching a consensus through open dialogue and deliberation. The JCP's report, incorporating the views of all stakeholders, is expected to be presented to Parliament before the Winter Session.
