Vinesh Phogat, a name synonymous with Indian wrestling, has embarked on a new chapter in her life by entering the political arena. The former wrestler, who endured heartbreak at the Paris Olympics 2024 after being disqualified due to being overweight, has joined the Congress party and will be contesting the upcoming Haryana elections. Her decision to pursue a political career comes after a highly successful wrestling journey, marked by numerous accolades and a decision to retire from the sport following her Olympic disqualification.
Phogat's political debut will be from the Julana Constituency in Jind. Her nomination filing has shed light on her financial status, revealing that she owns three cars - a Volvo XC 60 valued at Rs 35 lakh, a Hyundai Creta worth Rs 12 lakh, and a Toyota Innova priced at Rs 17 lakh. She is also currently repaying a loan associated with one of her vehicles. Further, Phogat declared immovable property worth Rs 2 crore and revealed that she possesses Rs 1.95 lakh in cash. Her Income Tax returns indicate an income of Rs 13,85,000 for the financial year 2023-24.
Vinesh's decision to enter politics has stirred interest within the Phogat family. Her uncle, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a renowned wrestling coach, has stated that her entry into politics allows his daughter, Sangeeta Phogat, to carry on his dream of Olympic glory. He has begun training Sangeeta for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, believing that she can secure a medal for India. This comes amidst the backdrop of Sangeeta missing the nationals due to the Jantar Mantar protest and Babita Phogat's knee injuries hindering her return to the mat.
