A tragic bus accident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, has claimed the lives of 17 people, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the region. The incident occurred on Friday when a roadways bus collided with a van carrying 15 passengers, including four women and four children, on National Highway 93 near Kanwarpur village. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the immediate deaths of 15 individuals. Sadly, the death toll rose to 17 on Saturday as two children, a 2-year-old named Appi and a 12-year-old named Gulshan, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Aligarh.

The passengers in the van were returning to their home in Agra from Hathras after attending a 'chaalisvaa' (a mourning ritual) in the Sasni area. The accident occurred when the bus attempted to overtake the van, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Nipun Agarwal confirmed that a case has been registered and arrests will be made swiftly to ensure accountability for the tragic incident.

Following the accident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath swiftly directed district officials to reach the scene and provide necessary relief measures. He also announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each to those severely injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of life and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. He also announced compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured. President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her condolences and prayers for the recovery of the injured. The local administration is working tirelessly to provide all possible assistance to the victims under the supervision of the state government.
