The ongoing protests by junior doctors in Kolkata have taken a dramatic turn with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleging a conspiracy to assault the protesting doctors. The party claims that opposition political forces are behind this plot, aiming to discredit the administration of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the ruling party in West Bengal. The TMC presented an alleged audio recording featuring two individuals discussing plans to attack the doctors during their sit-in protest outside Swasthya Bhavan on September 12th. This alleged plot comes at a time of heightened tension between the protesting doctors and the West Bengal government.
The junior doctors' demonstrations, which began on September 10th, are fueled by concerns over alleged corruption in the medical education sector. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which led to the arrest of its former principal, Sandip Ghosh. The doctors are also seeking justice for the tragic murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the same hospital. The TMC leader, Kunal Ghosh, expressed concerns about the potential for further attacks on the protesting doctors, urging law enforcement to remain vigilant. He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The situation escalated further when two individuals, including CPI(M) leader Kalatan Dasgupta, were arrested for allegedly orchestrating the conspiracy to attack the doctors. The police initiated a suo motu case based on the audio recording and identified the second individual involved as Sanjiv Das. This incident highlights the political tensions surrounding the protests and raises concerns about potential violence targeting the protesting medical professionals. The protests, fueled by concerns over corruption and lack of justice, have created a complex situation in West Bengal, involving multiple political parties and law enforcement agencies.
