The Trinamool Congress (TMC), the ruling party in West Bengal, has announced a boycott of three prominent television news channels, accusing them of perpetuating an “anti-Bengal agenda-driven propaganda” against the state government. This decision comes amidst widespread outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, which has led to protests and calls for accountability from the state government.
The TMC's statement specifically targets ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV9, claiming they have consistently pushed a negative narrative about West Bengal. The party alleges that these channels are motivated by a desire to please their “ZAMINDARS of Delhi,” implying a connection to the central government and its political interests. The statement further emphasizes that the party will not send any spokespersons to participate in news debates on these channels, effectively silencing their presence in these platforms.
The TMC's decision to boycott these channels can be traced back to a heated exchange between BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar during a television debate. During the debate, Dastidar, in a controversial move, referred to Paul, a fashion designer, as a “saree-maker,” drawing criticism for her seemingly disrespectful remark. The TMC leader also made a statement about medical students being forced to “sit on laps” during the CPM era in Bengal, further fueling outrage and accusations of insensitivity.
Dastidar later issued an apology for her remarks on social media, expressing remorse for any offense caused. However, the incident, coupled with the ongoing controversy surrounding the doctor's death, has intensified political tensions in West Bengal.
