An encounter between security forces and terrorists erupted on Wednesday near the Kathua-Basantgarh border in Jammu & Kashmir's Udhampur district. This incident unfolded when a combined unit of the Army's first para and police personnel advanced toward Khandara top, acting on intelligence that suggested the presence of a militant group in the area. The exchange of fire commenced at approximately 12.50 pm as the search teams approached the suspected location.

An official statement confirmed the details of the encounter, highlighting that a joint team of local police and army had launched a cordon and search operation in Khandara Top of Basantgarh. As the security forces closed in on the suspected hiding place of the terrorists, they came under fire, triggering the encounter. To neutralize the militants, additional personnel were immediately dispatched to the region.

Prior to the encounter, an incident of unprovoked firing from Pakistani troops targeting Indian posts in the Akhnoor area resulted in injuries to a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The firing incident occurred at approximately 2.35 am and prompted a retaliatory response from the BSF. A BSF spokesperson clarified that the troops were on high alert and maintaining a strict vigil along the International Border and Line of Control.
