The state of Telangana in India is grappling with the aftermath of heavy rains that have caused widespread flooding, claiming the lives of nine people in just 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of more heavy rains in the coming days, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.
The IMD has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall in the Adilabad district on Monday, leading the Cyberabad Police to urge IT and ITES companies to encourage their employees to work from home on September 2nd. The Hyderabad district has also been declared on holiday for all primary and secondary schools, under all managements, to ensure the safety of children.
The floods have caused significant disruptions, including the closure of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway due to overflowing water bodies. Tragically, a scientist and her father were swept away in flash floods while on their way to the Hyderabad airport. The incident underscores the devastating impact of the heavy rainfall. Overflowing lakes, tanks, and streams have cut off several villages, and relief efforts are underway.
The Telangana government has stepped up relief measures, and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is expected to hold a meeting with officials to discuss the situation. Flood victims in Khammam have reported losing their belongings and facing shortages of drinking water. The South Central Railway has cancelled and diverted some train services, while the Panchayat Raj Minister, Danasari Anasuya, is visiting rain-affected areas in Mahabubabad to assess the situation and ensure relief measures are being implemented effectively.
