In a recent development concerning food safety and religious practices, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken action against substandard food items at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvaarla Devasthanam temple in Vijayawada. A team led by Joint Food Controller N. Purnachandra Rao conducted inspections over two days, leading to the seizure of 1,000 kg of cashew and 800 kg of raisins, both deemed unfit for consumption due to poor quality. The seized items were part of the temple's offerings, known as prasadam, distributed to devotees.

The FSSAI's decision to confiscate the cashew and raisins highlights the importance of maintaining food safety standards, even within religious institutions. The seized items were intended for use in laddu, pongali, and other prasadams, which are considered sacred offerings and consumed by numerous devotees. The FSSAI's investigation also involved questioning the contractor responsible for supplying the cashew and raisins. The contractor will be served with notices, and their godowns and stores will be inspected to verify the quality of materials and the cleanliness of their facilities. This investigation aims to address the root cause of the substandard food items and prevent similar incidents in the future.
