The debate surrounding a nationwide caste census in India continues to heat up, with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), firmly opposing its use as a political tool. The RSS, during its conference in Kerala, highlighted the sensitive nature of the issue, emphasizing that it should be approached with seriousness rather than being utilized for election campaigns.
The RSS's stand comes amidst calls from the opposition Congress party, who see a caste census as a crucial step towards addressing socio-economic inequalities and alleged disparities in reservations. However, the RSS cautioned against the exploitation of the issue for political gain, stating that while it recognizes the need for data in certain welfare schemes, the census should not be manipulated for partisan purposes.
Sunil Ambekar, the RSS chief spokesperson, articulated the organization's position, asserting that caste and caste relations are sensitive matters requiring careful consideration. He emphasized that data collected should be solely for welfare purposes and not serve as a political tool. This statement appears to be directed at the Congress, who have actively campaigned for a caste census, aligning it with their political agenda.
In addition to the caste census debate, the RSS also addressed concerns regarding alleged conversion activities by missionaries in Tamil Nadu. Based on reports from various organizations, the RSS stated that missionary conversion activities in the state are worrisome and will be taken seriously. They emphasized that further details will be gathered from the ground level to address this issue.
