RG Kar Rape Case: Accused's Custody Extended
  • Sanjay Roy's judicial custody extended for 14 more days.
  • CBI faced judge's ire for being late to court.
  • Roy's polygraph test showed inconsistencies in his statements.

The case of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital continues to unfold with the recent extension of judicial custody for Sanjay Roy, the sole arrested accused. A special court in Kolkata on Friday, September 6th, extended Roy's custody for another 14 days, keeping him in detention until September 20th. This decision was made after a brief hearing at the court, where Roy was presented virtually due to security concerns amidst public outrage surrounding the case.

The hearing, however, was marred by the late arrival of the CBI and its counsel, which drew the judge's ire. At the time of Roy's virtual presentation, only an Assistant Investigation Officer from the CBI was present. This prompted the judge to express his displeasure, even suggesting the possibility of granting bail to the accused due to the CBI's absence. After the arrival of the CBI counsel, the hearing commenced and the judge ultimately granted the central agency's plea for extending Roy's judicial custody.

The case has been under intense scrutiny since its inception. After the initial arrest of Roy by the Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), the investigation was handed over to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Roy was subsequently transferred to the Presidency Central Correctional Home in south Kolkata on August 23rd, where he was remanded to 14 days' judicial custody. The CBI has been actively conducting investigations, including polygraph tests on Roy. Reports indicate significant inconsistencies between Roy's statements during regular interrogation and his responses during the polygraph test.

The extension of judicial custody reflects the ongoing nature of the investigation and the complexities surrounding the case. The CBI's late arrival at the court highlights the seriousness of the situation and the need for meticulous handling of the case, given the public's intense interest and concern. The inconsistencies detected during the polygraph test further underscore the crucial role of the investigation in seeking justice for the victim and holding the accused accountable for his alleged actions.
