Former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali has lashed out at the pitch curators in Pakistan, accusing them of providing poor playing surfaces. Ali's criticism comes after India's convincing win over Bangladesh in the first Test at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. He praised the pitch curators in Chennai for preparing a balanced surface that provided a good contest between bat and ball throughout the match.
Ali highlighted the fact that India's bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep, were able to take advantage of the pitch and claim a total of 20 wickets. He specifically mentioned that the pitch allowed both pace and spin to be effective, which resulted in a well-fought Test match. He contrasted this with the pitches used in Pakistan, which he claims are often not conducive to a good game of cricket.
Ali expressed his frustration with the lack of emphasis on providing good pitches in Pakistan, claiming that there is no value given to the quality of the surface. He criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for not taking the issue seriously and for failing to provide proper training and education to young players about the importance of a good pitch. Ali emphasized that understanding the pitch is crucial for any cricketer and cited the examples of legendary players like Sunil Gavaskar and Javed Miandad, who were known for their ability to read the pitch and adapt their game accordingly.
India's win in Chennai has further strengthened their position in the World Test Championship (WTC). They have now won seven out of their last nine WTC matches, securing the top spot in the standings with a points percentage of 71.67%. Bangladesh, on the other hand, suffered a significant setback in their WTC campaign after their loss to India, dropping to sixth place in the table with a points percentage of 39.29%.
