The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a depression in the Bay of Bengal, prompting heavy rainfall warnings for Odisha over the next three days. The development has led the Odisha government to issue a high alert for 16 districts, urging preparedness for potential flooding and disruption.
The IMD has detailed the movement of the depression, currently located about 280 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It is projected to move towards the north Odisha-West Bengal coasts and intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. Subsequently, it is expected to cross the Odisha and West Bengal coastline between Puri and Digha around the evening of September 9th, continuing its westward movement across Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and parts of Chhattisgarh.
To effectively address the potential impacts of the depression, the IMD has issued weather warnings for various districts. A yellow warning is in place for 16 districts, indicating potential rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm. A more severe red warning, predicting rainfall exceeding 20 cm, has been issued for five districts: Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, and Cuttack for September 9th. Furthermore, fishermen have been advised to stay ashore until September 11th.
The Odisha government, through its Special Relief Commissioner, has activated its administrative machinery to respond to any emergency situations. While widespread population displacement might not be necessary, authorities have emphasized the importance of staying informed about weather updates and taking necessary precautions. There is a concern regarding the potential for submergence of low-lying areas in urban areas due to heavy rainfall.
