Neeraj Chopra, India's star javelin thrower, narrowly missed out on securing a second Diamond League Final title in Brussels, finishing second to Grenada's Anderson Peters by a heartbreaking margin of just 1 centimeter. The event, held on a cold and windy Saturday night in the Belgian capital, saw Neeraj achieve a best throw of 87.86m on his third attempt, falling short of Peters' initial throw of 87.87m.
This setback marked the end of a successful 2024 athletics season for Neeraj, during which he secured a silver medal at the Paris Olympics and finished second at the Doha Diamond League. Notably, he also registered three throws exceeding the 89m mark this year. The 2022 Diamond League champion, Neeraj was competing in his fifth DL Final, having previously secured a seventh-place finish in 2017, a fourth-place finish in 2018, and the championship title in 2022. The challenging conditions in Brussels, including cold temperatures and an uneven track, added to the difficulties faced by the competitors, as highlighted by Germany's Julian Weber, who finished third despite an underwhelming final throw.
