The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct seven new ring roads across Mumbai, aiming to revolutionize transportation within the city and drastically reduce travel time. This project, estimated to cost ₹58,517 crore, is expected to enable Mumbaikars to traverse the city within an hour, a significant improvement from the current travel times. The proposed ring roads, along with other infrastructure developments, are part of a larger plan encompassing metro lines, bridges, flyovers, and slum redevelopment initiatives, with a total projected cost of ₹3 lakh crore.
The seven proposed ring roads are strategically designed to enhance connectivity within the city, particularly focusing on improving east-west travel. Each ring road has a distinct route and connects various key landmarks and roadways within Mumbai. The First Ring Road will connect Nariman Point to the Bandra Sea Link, Sewri-Worli Connector, Eastern Freeway, and Coastal Road. The Second Ring Road will connect Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Western Express Highway, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, Eastern Express Highway, and Orange Gate Tunnel. The Third Ring Road will link Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Bandra-Versova Link, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, Powai-Kanjurmarg Junction, and Eastern Express Freeway. The Fourth Ring Road will connect Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Versova-Bandra Sea Link, Versova-Dahisar Link Road, Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, and Eastern Freeway. The Fifth Ring Road will connect Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Versova-Bandra Sea Link, Versova-Dahisar Link Road, Mira-Bhayander Link Road, and Thane Coastal Road. The Sixth Ring Road will connect Nariman Point to the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, Mira-Bhayander Link Road, Uttan Link Road, and Thane Coastal Road. The Seventh Ring Road will connect Nariman Point to the Versova-Dahisar Link Road, Uttan Link Road, Vadodara Mumbai Expressway, and Alibaug-Virar Corridor.
These ring roads are anticipated to significantly impact the city's productivity by improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters. The project is expected to be a game-changer for Mumbai, offering a more efficient and convenient transportation system. The implementation of this comprehensive infrastructure plan will not only benefit Mumbaikars but also contribute to the city's overall development and economic growth. While the project is still in its planning phase, the MMRDA is committed to realizing this vision and transforming Mumbai into a city with a seamless and efficient transportation network.
