Mumbai, a bustling metropolis grappling with chronic traffic congestion, is set to witness a significant transformation in its transportation infrastructure. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the planning authority for the city's metropolitan region, has approved a massive ₹58,517 crore project to build a new 90-kilometer network of ring roads. This ambitious initiative, dubbed "Mumbai In Minutes," aims to drastically reduce travel time across the city, ultimately bringing it down to under an hour.
The "Mumbai In Minutes" project envisions a comprehensive network of ring roads strategically connecting the city via sea, creek, forests, and urban highways. This interconnected system will serve as a lifeline for efficient and convenient travel, easing the burden of the city's ever-growing traffic volume. The project's importance is further amplified by the anticipated increase in traffic flow due to other major infrastructure projects like the Navi Mumbai International Airport and Wadhwan Port. The proposed ring roads will act as crucial arteries for smooth connectivity, ensuring seamless movement within the city.
The MMRDA, in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and National Highways Authority of India, is determined to bring this ambitious plan to fruition. The project will involve the construction of both outer and inner ring roads, creating a robust network to tackle the city's infamous traffic bottlenecks. While most of these new roads will be tolled, the project promises a significant improvement in travel time, with the aim of enabling a journey from one end of the city to the other within 59 minutes. This signifies a paradigm shift in Mumbai's transportation landscape, paving the way for a more efficient and connected urban experience.
